Are Pepper Sprays Dangerous? When I am out demonstrating protection devices for our website BodyGuardX there are many questions that people ask over and over. I want to review some of these questions I am repeatedly asked. One question I get asked so many times is, “Are Pepper Sprays dangerous?” I have learned to ask each one first, “In what way do you think it is dangerous?" A very small number ask if it affects the victims breathing. Some are worried about their own asthma. These questions I really don't have an answer because everyone is different. I think they should spray it outside and test it to see if they have difficulties. As for anyone you have to use it on I say that would be their problem. Most of them are really concerned that the attacker will get up immediately and do worst damage to them out of anger. For those that are worried about it coming back to them this is a real concern. When you carry pepper spray you better be prepared in your mind first. Be prepared to hold your breath, fight off the person with your feet, and run away after you have given them a large dose. Imagine what you will do and tell yourself to get out of harm’s way as soon as possible. It is important to give them a large dose and move away so they cannot wrestle the spray away from you. Most pepper sprays have a long range so you don't have to be close anyways. So the danger of them wrestling it out of your hands and using it on you is minimum. Being prepared is the most important thing. Preparation makes pepper spray a safe protection tool. One gal said that she always ran the scenario in her head over and over. She had to kick an attacker between the legs and he still had 5 seconds to grab her before he felt the full kick. It was a scary five seconds. She felt that the pepper spray has a quicker response. In full close attacks like this of course I think pepper spray is the wrong tool to have. Nothing like a 4 second taser burst to stop an attacker. Yet if one has no choice you use whatever you have to get out of there. Just make sure it is a large enough dose to give you those 5 seconds to get away. When they are up close pepper sprays come in various unsuspecting forms. Some look like lipstick. Others like jogging weights. They are even in rings you can wear for up close repelling of an attacker. You don't even have to be close there are pepper guns for parking lot confrontations. Many people believe it just gets the attacker angrier. I personally have only used this on dogs. They were stopped in their tracks while I booted out of there. If you have never smelled pepper spray go outside and spray it into a garbage bag. It has a hot peppery taste in your nose, mouth and eyes that you just cannot get rid of quickly. If used correctly it is meant to give you time to get away. Others have even said that they carry a taser as well. Swearing if they are ever attacked they will use both. I say fine, but still think in terms of getting immediately out of harm’s way. I have friends who have been mugged. They were never given the opportunity to use their self defense equipment. These muggers just attacked them without warning. Others were asked for valuables and they just handed them over but had the pepper spray in their pockets knowing if things got out of hand they were going to use it. That is why I believe in playing out in your head what you want to do. Are pepper sprays dangerous? I believe if used right they are not. I believe in them and that is why I sell them. I think nature has the right idea. I watch the skunks come out along the river banks when I am out fishing. They are out right cute to watch. I don't feel threatened by them but I do get out of their way. Animals that do bother them are usually stopped in their tracks immediately by their spray. The same thing happens with pepper spray. Of course if you got a cheap pepper spray and think it is going to stop a grizzly you are mistaken. If you are unfortunate enough to become the victim of a man comparable to an angry grizzly yes pepper spray is not the tool you want in your hands at the moment. If that is all you have what choice does one have? Use it all up and run. So when they ask me, "Aren't Pepper Sprays dangerous?" If used correctly not at all. I just say they are better than nothing at all. If I ran into a grizzly personality and just giving them my possessions is not enough, well I am going down with my boots on. If you are unsure of pepper sprays then carry it for the animals you meet while jogging and bicycling. Then follow me to the cabinet and I have some tasers that when used right will knock a grizzly like attacker on his butt.
